Do not let anybody trample upon you! And if you help somebody, be sure on what she (or anybody else) is going to spend your money. Otherwise you are risking to hear anything not only about “improved position in life” but also about the person who needed this improvement so badly!

Be on your guard and control the situation unless you know the person well enough and can rely on her.
